From July 7 to 16, 2025, “M-Talents” International Summer School of theSchoolof Materials Science and Engineering at Peking University was held at the Yan Yuan campus. With the theme “Frontiers ofMaterials Science and Cross-Cultural Dialogue,” this year’s summer school brought together outstanding students from Vietnam, Singapore, Germany, Malaysia, Thailand, Turkmenistan, and other countries. Through a series ofcutting-edgelectures, laboratory visits, company tours, metalworking training, and Chinese cultureexperiencingactivities, it created an internationalcommunicationblending academic rigor, hands-on practice, and cultural experience.

Academicas a Base: Exploring the Frontiers of Materials Science

“M-Talents” Summer School focused on cutting-edge developments in materials science, carefully designing multi-dimensional academic activities.Through events such as“Frontier Academic Symposium”and“Research Stories from Young MaterialsScientists”, participants gained in-depth understanding of advanced research areas including carbon nanotechnology, new energy catalytic materials, and AI for Science.During laboratory tours, participants engaged in lively discussions with current PhD students on experimental design and technological applications.“Roundtable Discussion on Materials Career Development”bridged academia and industry, with experts from well-known companies sharing industry trends and sparking new ideas through interactiveconversations.

Frontier Academic Symposium

Practice as Wings: Integrating Knowledge and Action for Growth

This summer school creatively integrated academic and practicalactivities. With access to advanced 3D printing laboratories and jewelry processing workshops, participants systematically mastered digital manufacturing techniques such as 3D modeling and printingparameter setupthrough the metalwork course. They also operated laser cutters and precision grinders to complete the full process of diamond cutting and polishing.During company visits, studentstoured the production base of Oriental Yuhong tolearnthe R&D process of polymer waterproof materials, and learned about the development process of sports shoes at Li-Ning Group’s InnovationandDesign Center. This vividly illustrated the application of materials science and ergonomics knowledge from the classroom, effectively connecting laboratory research with industrial applications.

Tours and Hands-on Activities

Culture as a Bridge: Mutual Learning and Cross-Cultural Integration

To actively implement the Global Civilization Initiative and promote cross-cultural communication,“M-Talents”summer school featured a series of cultural immersionactivities. At theChinesetraditionalcalligraphy and sealengravingworkshop, participants experienced the beauty of Chinese characters; the Tai Chi course conveyed the wisdom of traditional health cultivation; and the music salon used melodies to build bridges of understanding. At the International Culture Night before graduation, students from various countries woretheirtraditional costumes and showcased the charm of diverse cultures through photos, videos, and cuisine.

Cultural Activities

Fruitful Outcomes: Building an International Exchange Platform

This year’s summer school achieved three breakthroughs:

A record in the number of participating countries,

Deeper school–enterprise cooperation,

More diverse forms of cultural experiences.

At the closing ceremony, Zhao Xiaoxu, Assistant Dean of the College of Materials Science and Engineering, and Lv Jia from the Academic Affairs Office gave a summary and review of the event.Zhao Xiaoxu remarked:

“Over the past ten days, we have witnessed the collision of academic ideas and gained friendships that transcend national borders. This perfectly reflects Peking University’s philosophy of ‘embracing diversity.’”

Through various activities, participants not only broadened their academic horizons and enhanced their knowledge but also gained friendships and mutual understanding through culturalcommunication. With the awarding of graduation certificates, students took a group photo by Weiming Lake, capturing the wonderful moments of this summer.

This feast of academic and cultural exchange has not only broadened the academic perspectives of young people worldwide but also injected fresh vitality into the global materials science community.
