School of Materials Science and Engineering (PKU) Holds 2024 Summer Strategy Seminar

Timplement the university's “Year of Academic Quality” initiative and discuss the planning of disciplinary development, the School of Materials Science and Engineering (PKU) held the 2024 Summer Strategy Seminar on August 25-26 at the Academic Exchange Center of the New Yanyuan Campus. Zhang Jin, Vice President of Peking University, Party Committee member, and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, attended the meeting, which was attended by all faculty members from both the main and Shenzhen campuses.

Zhang Jin acknowledged the School's achievements in various areas and outlined the challenges it faces. He stressed that the School should further refine its disciplinary strengths, optimize the training system for master's and doctoral engineering programs, fully support the development of the Zhengzhou Advanced Research Institute of New Materials (PKU), and focus on creating new opportunities for developing off-campus research institution platforms.

Zou Ruqiang delivered a comprehensive report on the overall work of the School, summarizing interim achievements in disciplinary development, talent cultivation, scientific research, and the research outcome transformation. He also outlined the basic framework for School's future work.

Subsequently, directors and members from five institute under the School presented reports on their development status introduced future work plans focusing on the overall academic development strategy.

On the afternoon of August 25, participants engaged in group discussions based on the School's current situation, focusing on disciplinary development measures. They shared suggestions and insights on various topics, including Party building, talent cultivation, research collaboration, and integration between the northern and southern campuses.

Each of the School's administrative leaders gave reports on key areas, covering Party affairs, administration, student affairs, faculty and talent management, scientific research, platform development, and the work of the School of Advanced Materials in Shenzhen. They summarized the progress, highlighted distinctive initiatives, addressed challenges, and proposeddirection for future efforts.

On the morning of August 26, the School held a seminar focused on talent cultivation, discussing topics such as student training and curriculum development within the context of emerging engineering disciplines. Participants engaged in discussions based on the seminar content, offering reflections and suggestions for the next steps in key areas and curriculum optimization.
