On April 17, 2023, in order to strengthen inter-school communication and learning and further optimize and enhance undergraduate teaching and training programs, the School of Materials Science and Engineering, Peking University (SMSEPKU) and the School of Materials Science and Engineering, South China University of Technology (SMSESCUT) organized a symposium.Prof Su Shijian, Vice Dean of SMSESCUT,Prof Li Ning, Head of the Innovation Class, Prof Wang Xin, Director of the Department,Prof Yao Rihui, Deputy Director of the Department, Prof Gao Junning, Deputy Director of the Department, Associate Prof Wang Dan, Deputy Director of the Department, Prof Lei Ting, Assistant Dean of SMSEPKU, Prof Lin Li, Prof Xu Shenzhen, Dr Gao Song, Mrs. Lv Shuang, Director of the Academic Affairs Office, and Mrs.Liu Xuchen, Secretary of the Academic Affairs Office attended the meeting. The symposium was held in Room 137inthe Integrated Science Research Center.ProfLei Ting presided over the ceremony.

Prof Lei Ting warmly welcomed Professor Su Shijian and hiscolleagues. He expressed his support for the teaching communication between the two schools and his hope of deepening the understanding between the schools, exchanging knowledge, and assisting in the discipline cultivation and talent construction work of the schools through this opportunity.

ProfLei Ting welcomed ProfSu Shijian and his delegation.

Su Shijian gave a comprehensive introduction to SMSESCUT from the perspectives of its history,,future vision, and researchdirection and facilities, student teaching, facultyrecruitment and development, social services, international exchanges and cooperations, etc. In addition, he focused on introducing the functional materials major and the material innovation class. The functional materials major of SMSESCUT focuses on the electronic information industry. With electronic information materials, devices, and their applications as features, it teaches the students about materials, devices, system integration, and application technologies while providing students with practical training and a comprehensive knowledge system. The Materials Innovation Class is rooted in a national development scheme. It has constructed an elite training model of “student source—cultivation—path”, a science and education collaborative innovation practice model of “attaching importance to foundation and practice”, and an international education model of “quaternity”. It aims at cultivating leading talents of “three abilities” (learning, thinking, and action) and “three skills” (innovation, creation, and entrepreneurship) in the field of materials.

Prof Lei Ting introduced the disciplinary characteristics and positioning, school layout, talent cultivation, faculty, scientific research achievements, platform construction, etc.,of SMSEPKU under the background of the new engineering discipline. In addition, he gave a detailed introduction to the mechanics foundation program, the training plans for materials science and engineering majors and the “double-major” program, the characteristic courses, the characteristic undergraduate training ways, and the employment of undergraduate students.

ProfLin Li,ProfXu Shenzhen, andDrGao Song gave a brief introduction to the course background, course construction, core content, and teaching methods of their courses “Intercrossing Science Experiment”, “Machine Learning Assisted Materials Simulation Practice”, and “Engineering Training”. Later, they engaged in in-depth discussions and exchanges around the training plan, double-major projects, curriculum design, class mode, experimental space, platform design and planning, and other aspects.

This symposium effectively promoted communication and exchange of views between the two schools on the further optimization and improvement of undergraduate training programs. While deepening the concept of combining courses and experiments, engineering and practice in teaching, it expanded new perspectives and inspired new ideas for the construction of materials disciplines and talent cultivation.
