Beijing-Hong Kong Symposium on Biocomposite Materials Was Held at Peking University

From December 18 to 20, 2024, the “Beijing-HongKong Symposium on Biocomposite Materials” and the inauguration ceremony of the Institute of Life and Health Materials of the School of Materials Science and Engineering (PKU) were held at Peking University. Thesymposiumwas jointly organized by the School of Materials Science and Engineering (PKU), the Bio-Composite Materials Division of the Chinese Society for Composite Materials, and the University of Hong Kong, withsupportfrom the University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital, Beijing Naton Technology Group Co., Ltd.,Bioactive Materials, and Shenzhen Lando Biomaterials Co., Ltd.

Thesymposiumbrought together over a hundred experts, scholars, and young students from mainland China and Hong Kong in the field of bio-composite materials. Through keynote speeches and invitedtalks, participants explored various aspects of fundamental researchprogressand the prospects fortheindustrial applications of bio-composite materials.

On the afternoon of the 18th, the inauguration ceremony of the Institute of Life and Health Materialsofthe School of Materials Science and Engineering (PKU) was held at the North Annex of Peking University Library. The ceremony was presided over by Professor Zheng Yufeng, Director of the Institute of Life and Health Materials. He reviewed the history of biomaterials research at Peking University and introduced the background, faculty, research directions, and future vision of the institute.

Professor Zou Ruqiang, Dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering (PKU), stated in his speech that the establishment of the Institute of Life and Health Materialsis a significantstep for the school incontributing topublic health and advancing the development of new engineering disciplines. He expressed hope that this conference would enhance communication and collaboration between experts from Beijing and Hong Kong,buildcloser ties, andtogethercreate a new chapter in bio-composite materials research.

Chen Xuesi,amemberof the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Honorary Director of the Institute of Life and Health Materialsofthe School of Materials Science and Engineering (PKU), and a researcher at the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, stated in his speech that the life and health materials industry isgrowingrapidly, making the establishment of the Institute of Life and Health Materials at Peking University particularly timely. Heexpressed his sincere hopethat experts and scholars from Beijing and Hong Kong would use this conference to exchange ideas, deepen cooperation, and promote the industrialization of bio-composite materials in China.

Following the speech, during the Peking University Life and Health Materials Lecture Series, Chen Xuesi delivered a keynote presentation titled “Polymeric Nanodrug Carrier Materials”. In his talk, he provided an in-depth analysis of the current research progress and industrialization prospects of polymeric nanodrug carriers in cancer treatment.

Professor Deng Xuliang,Deanof Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology, delivered an invitedtalktitled “High-Strength Titanium Carbide Composite Films Prepared by Continuous Processing for Efficient Osteogenesis Promotion”, discussing the research progress and industrial applications of bio-composite materials in bone regeneration.

Professor Wang Yupeng from Peking University Third Hospital, on behalf of Vice President Professor Tang Yida, gave an invitedtalktitled “Cardiovascular Devices and Biomaterials”, highlighting advancements in bio-composite materials for cardiovascular treatment and their industrial applications.

On the morning of the 19th, the opening ceremony of thesymposiumwas held at the North Annex of Peking University Library. The ceremony was presided over by Professor Wu Shuilin, Deputy Director of the Institute of Life and Health Materialsofthe School of Materials Science and Engineering (PKU).

Professor Zheng Yufeng, Professor Zheng Yudong from the University of Science and Technology Beijing and a board member of the Chinese Society for Composite Materials, and Professor Yang Weiguo from the University of Hong Kong delivered opening speeches. They encouraged scholars from Beijing and Hong Kong toactivelyengage in discussions and collaborationduringthe conference, jointly advancing fundamental research andthetechnological transformationofbio-composite materials.

The three-day academic event brought togetherleadingscholars from mainland China and Hong Kongto engage in discussions and exchangescentered aroundthe theme of “Biocomposites”,yieldingfruitful outcomes. In the future, thesymposiumwill continue to serve as a bridge for academic exchanges between scholars from mainland China and Hong Kong in the field of biocomposites, promoting the joint development of biocomposite technology, advanced medical devices, and the biomedical industry in both regions. It will also drive the research, development, andcommercializationof cutting-edge technologies and products in the medical industry.
