The 2024 National Materials Science Symposium was Successfully Held in Zhengzhou, Henan Province

On the afternoon of May 18th, the 2024 National Materials Science Symposium was successfully held at the Zhongyuan Longzi Lake Academic Exchange Center in Zhengzhou, Henan Province. Hosted jointly by Peking University and the Zhengzhou Municipal People's Government, the conference was attended by 76 deans, department heads, and faculty members from 45 domestic universities, focusing on strategic discussions concerning the high-quality development of the materials science discipline.

Zhou Huanping warmly welcomed and sincerely thanked all academicians, deans, and experts for their presence. She briefly introduced the progress made by Peking University's materials science discipline in talent cultivation, discipline construction, and industry-academia-research collaboration. She emphasized that the new materials industry is a strategic and foundational sector crucial for high-tech competition. She expressed hope that through this conference, they could collectively provide insights and recommendations for the innovation and development of Zhengzhou Advanced Research Institute for New Materials (PKU), materials science discipline, and new materials industry. Together, they aimed to inject new vitality into the development of central China's new quality productive forces and make greater contributions to achieving self-reliance and self-improvement in high-level science and technology.

During the presentation part, each speaker shared their experiences from their respective schools in the field of materials science across several dimensions: management structure, talent development, scientific research, industrial applications, international exchanges and societal services, as well as distinctive projects. They analyzed current challenges and proposed solutions, providing numerous insights and inspirations to the delegates in attendance.

Following that, experts at the meeting engaged in a lively discussion on the development strategies for the discipline of materials science. They analyzed the current trends in the forefront of the materials industry under the context of constructing new engineering disciplines, the new requirements for talent development in the new era. Valuable opinions and suggestions were put forward from aspects including faculty team construction, cultivation of outstanding innovative talents, undergraduate program development, scientific research, and societal service. The experts also emphasized the importance of advancing the discipline of materials science in depth, promoting interdisciplinary integration, advancing collaborative innovation among academia, industry, and research institutions, breaking through core technologies, and leading high-quality development of materials science, injecting vitality into the development of new quality productive forces.
