On December 24-25, the first Advanced Materials International Young Scholar Forum of Peking University was successfully held. Nearly 30 outstanding young scholars from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge University, University of California, Berkeley, University of Toronto, Rice University and other schools around the world gathered through the internet to discuss the latest research trends of advanced materials. The forum was conducted online and broadcast globally through the network, attracting nearly 100000 audiences.
This forum is hosted by the School of Materials Science and Engineering (SMSE), Peking University (PKU). It aims to deeply implement the spirit of the 20thNational Congress of the Communist Party of China and implement the strategy of strengthening the university through science, technology and talent. Based on the opportunity of constructing the new engineering discipline of PKU in this new era, this forum also focuses on the forefront of science and technology in the field of advanced materials, gathering outstanding young scholars of materials at home and abroad, and building a world-class academic exchange and interaction platform.
On the morning of December 24th, the forum was successfully launched. Guo Shaojun, the Deputy Secretary of the CPC School of Council Materials Science and Engineering Committee, PKU presided over the opening ceremony. Fang Fang, the Director of the Office of Human Resources, PKU, delivered a welcome speech and interpreted PKU’s talent policy. Zou Ruqiang, the Dean of SMSE, and Pan Feng, the Dean of School of Advanced Materials at Shenzhen Graduate School, introduced the basic situation of SMSE and the School of Advanced Materials to the young scholars and issued a warm invitation.
Fang Fang pointed out that the central government attaches great importance to works relating to talent. In the report of the 20thNational Congress of the Communist Party of China, the 5 “firstly proposed contents” relating to talent highlight the high standards and requirements for the in-depth implementation of the talent power strategy. As a national model among universities, PKU took the lead in holding a conference about talent works and bringing forward measures to deeply implement the strategy of strengthening the university with talents in the new era. In addition, Fang Fang also comprehensively introduced the experience, practices, and achievements of talent work of PKU and mainly talked about the title promotions, salary package, scientific research support and so on that young teachers care about. He emphasized that PKU will implement the spirit about talent of the 20thNational Congress of the Communist Party of China and continue to implement the strategic policy of “strengthening the university with talents” and all colleagues in the Office of Human Resources will try their best to give good service.

Zou Ruqiang made a report “The Construction and Development of School of Materials Science and Engineering, Peking University, in the Context of New Engineering” and comprehensively introduced SMSE to the young scholars from aspects of spatial layout, talent cultivation, faculty, discipline construction, scientific research platform, international exchange, social services and so on. He emphasized that talent is the foundation of establishing and strengthening SMSE, and SMSE regards the construction of high-quality faculty as the most important, basic and strategic work. As a brand-new college, SMSE builds a nest to attract phoenix and warmly welcomes outstanding talents from home and abroad to join in!

Pan Feng gave a keynote report on “Integration of North and South: School of Advanced Materials of Shenzhen Graduate School, Peking University”. He introduced the construction background of the new School of Advanced Materials based on Peking University and Shenzhen and the development concept of integrating North and South and jointly building world-class materials disciplines. He hopes to take this forum as an opportunity for young scholars to learn more about PKU, pay more attention to SMSE and the School of Advanced Materials, and choose and take root in them. He also told theparticipantsthat, the cultural heritage of Beijing and the innovative vitality of Shenzhen will help young scholars grow into talents!

After the opening ceremony, the sub-forums focused on the topics of “energy materials”, “optoelectronic materials”, “materials relating to life and health”, “advanced structural materials”, “new conceptual materials” and so on. The participants from relevant disciplines conducted in-depth discussions around the international academic frontier and hot issues in the field of materials.
