The School of Materials Science and Engineering held the first training course of “SMES’s psychology program” for the student psychological commissioners

On the afternoon of April 8, 2022, School of Materials Science and Engineering (SMSE) held the first psychological commissioners training course of “SMES’s psychology program” in Room 322, Integrated Science Research Center. Sun Bo, a full-time psychological consultant of the Student Counseling and Mental Health Center, was invited to give the training lesson for the teachers and students. Zhang Jing, a Deputy Secretary of the CPC School of Council Materials Science and Engineering Committee, Yuan Miaomiao, the Secretary of the General Youth League Branch of SMSE, Liu Jincheng, the Secretary of the Youth League Committee of SMSE, Liu Lili, the Deputy Director of SMSE’s Office, and Liu Lili, a cadre of the Scientific Research Management Center of SMSE, etc. attended the lesson. In addition, the lesson was hosted by Zhang Jing.

The Training Course

Zhang Jing first expressed her thanks to all students who actively signed up to serve as psychological committee members of the laboratory. Zhang Jing said that the laboratory is the most basic teaching and research organization and the most united and energetic group of SMSE, which plays an essential role in every postgraduate student’s study. SMSE has always wanted to establish independent student organizations in laboratory as the traditional party, class and youth league and make full use of this natural link to serve the students better. Last semester, SMSE launched the “SMES’s psychology program” and selected psychological commissioners from each laboratory. As the first training lecture of “SMES’s psychology program”, this lesson mainly has two themes: laboratory safety management and university students’ mental health. Zhang Jing expressed her hope that all members of the psychological committee would study the relevant knowledge carefully, strive to improve their ability, and protect the physical and mental health and safety of their classmates with professional perspectives, scientific methods, positive attitude and warm services.

Liu Jincheng took several recent safety accidents and violations inside and outside PKU as examples to explain the potential safety hazards in the laboratory that must be paid attention to. Moreover, he also introduced the management method of the SMSE’s monthly laboratory safety inspection and reminded students should be careful with experimental safety and always ring the safety alarm bell in their hearts.

Sun Bo explained how to identify the students’ common psychological problems, how to deal with them and how to take good care of themselves. In addition, he taught students popularized psychological health knowledge and trained them through games and meditation. After that, Sun Bo briefly introduced the mental health status of students in PKU and the crises that happened in universities in recent years. He proposed that the difficulty of crisis intervention was not in the intervention itself, but in discovering the crisis and finding the opportunity to intervene. During the training, students actively expressed their own opinions. Through discussing actual cases, they learned about scientific psychological counseling methods and improved their ability to intervene in psychological crises.

At the end of the lesson, students and teachers who attended the course expressed their gratitude for this training. This course provided an opportunity for them to discuss questions of their daily work and summarize their experiences and provided important theoretical basis and methodological supports for psychological counseling in future communication with students.
